Are Acne Scars Permanent?

March 9th, 2010

Acne scars are an awful reminder of the having suffered pimples or even acne previously. They are unbearable because of their apparent permanence and their non-complimentary look. Generally speaking, acne scars are quite difficult to eradicate, but tissue regeneration is not impossible these days with all the fantastic technological advancements.

Generally speaking, by acne scarring, we mean the healed lesions caused by an acne infection. While most scarring is temporary and will probably disappear naturally in time, scarring from the more severe forms of acne can become permanent.

Acne scarring can be prevented if the sufferer sees a doctor when it is in the incipient stage, particularly if nodules or cysts accompany the red pustules on the skin’s surface. If the breakouts of acne have marked your skin, you will have to approach the issue from a different perspective, which usually involves surgery.

Laser resurfacing is one possibility of removing the damaged skin parts and stimulating the natural regeneration of the tissue beneath. This operation only requires local anaesthetic and can take between a few minutes and an hour depending on the extent of the problem.

Fractional laser therapy is one of the most recent methods of removing acne scarring. It means surgical intervention at deep skin layers. The therapy is better than both dermabrasion and laser resurfacing in terms of quality and involves a much reduced healing period. Nevertheless, fractional laser therapy lies within the reach of only those few fortunate sufferers, who can pay for it, since it is the most expensive acne treatment currently available.

Sometimes, additional sessions are required to improve the condition of the superficial layers of skin, before they can tackle the deep level treatment of the acne scar. The doctor may inject collagen into the scars in order to raise the normal skin level or she/he may recommend micro-dermabrasion for the very same purpose. Trying to perform chemical peels for acne treatment at home could be a bad policy given the risk of aggravating the condition by irritating the scars even further.

As for the kinds of acne scars, they can be classified by the way they look. Scars can result because of an increase of tissue or due to a loss of tissue They both have an adverse impact on the way the face looks. Specialists’ evaluation of the nature of the scars is an extremely important factor in deciding on the selection of one form of therapy or the other.

Busting The Rapid Weight Loss Myths

March 2nd, 2010

There is nothing inherently wrong with wanting to be slimmer just to have a sexier body. Many people have moulded their bodies to make them look more healthy and more desirable. However, there is no way to attain this new appearance in a day of two. The problem is that most people do not want to wait, they want it now.

This can lead to these people making rather rash and, it has top be said, rather silly decisions. They are not willing to wait and they are not willing to work for what they want. This is why so many people turn to rapid weight loss diets. Some ‘guru’ brings out a new fad diet and a good proportion of the ‘I want it now’ crowd jump on the band wagon. Only to be disappointed again within the year or less.

Speed diets or rapid weight loss diets tend to put out impressive advertising copy that is very hard to resist. However, all diets, no matter which one you choose, Weight Watchers, Atkins or fad diet, depend on overweight people making lifestyle changes in order for them to work permanently.

There is a very apposite saying: if you always do what you always did, then you will always get what you always got. That says it all. You can lose weight with all but the stupidest of diets, but if you go back to your old ways when you hit your target weight, you MUST slowly, but surely creep back to your old weight.

If you give your body more calories than it needs, it will store them for when it does need them. The problem is that that day never comes for too many people, because they never exert themselves. This is especially true of fad diets like the ‘cabbage water’ diet. Yes, you will lose weight on it, but you would lose weight by fasting whatever you did. For a while, and then you might get sick. For a diet to work, it has to be flexible and enjoyable enough for you to be able to stick with it for the rest of your life. Make no mistake, dieting is long-haul.

Many rapid weight loss programs actually only squeeze the water out of you. Just like a wet sponge. But a good dieter maintains his or her grip on that sponge, not letting it soak up water again. The problem with short term dieting, is that you let go of the sponge underwater.

This is why serial dieters first lose weight and are happy; then finish dieting, go back to their old weight and become depressed. In that state of depression they are suckers for the advertisers of the next latest craze diet. In other words, they are being manipulated and literally squeezed dry, but of their money too.

These silly rapid weight loss programs also include fat loss pills. They are not making you lose fat, well, maybe a tiny amount gets flushed out with all the excess water you are carrying. They are only diuretics under another name. How many pills would I sell if I called them diuretics? How many more would I sell if I called them miracle fat loss pills?

Type the word diuretic into a engine and find out more about them. They are all around you in mild healthy forms. A diuretic will essentially cause your body to lose more fluid than was in the diuretic. Tea is a diuretic, for example.

This list of these dopey dieting aids to rapid weight loss goes on and on, but someone must be buying them and you can bet your bottom dollar that it is the sad, depressed dieter who let go of the sponge.

Slimming soap! Slimming soap is being advertised as being a rare Eastern remedy for corpulence. Well, let me tell you, I live in the East and I have never seen it here. Asians are slim because they do a lot of physical work and do not come under the pressure to eat junk food that Westerners do, although that situation is changing rapidly too.

Magnetic weight loss earrings, I ask you! Even being inebriated without a present for your wife ten minutes before Christmas Day is not a good enough excuse to fall for this one, surely? The advertisers say that the secret of this set of earrings is that they are magnetic.

Well, if you believe this, why not get a pair of $1 children’s toy magnets or even a pair of fridge magnets and put one in each hip pocket? Two? Well, after all, you would not want to lose weight from only one side, would you? You would be lop sided.

Just remember, when you are looking for a rapid weight loss diet: there ain’t one ( that will work for life). If you are putting on weight, then your lifestyle is wrong and it is up to you alone to change it.

Are You Hobbling Your Weight Loss Program?

February 28th, 2010

If you want to lose weight, you must have a plan, a route map to success. This is called a program or programme. There are thousands of programs, but many of them are just plain batty. If they sound foolish, they probably are. Have you heard of the ‘cabbage water diet’? It sounds daft and it is. You cannot only drink cabbage water all your life!

Although there is a lot of claptrap talked about losing weight, there are some truths that have a role to play in nearly any program you choose to follow. One of these truths is that it is better to eat many small meals during the day (about 5-6), than to go all day without eating and then stuffing yourself at dinner in the evening. This is commonly called ‘grazing’.

Have you ever wondered why this might be so? Well, the fact is, that the average human body can only process about 250 calories an hour. If you eat more than that, you are almost certainly overloading your digestive system. This is why it matters, because if your body cannot handle all the calories that you give it, it will stockpile them.

Your body can only use up what it requires to execute the job that it is busy with, that is, what you are putting it through. If you are watching TV, most of those 250 will be stored. If you are exercising, most will be burned up. It stores the remainder as body fat. Your body has learned through evolution that hard times will come, so it prepares for them. It is like us putting excess money in a savings account or people hoarding food if a bad winter is predicted.

However, these days in the West, we rarely face those lean times any longer. Therefore, that fat is never used up and we just keep adding to it until we decide, by choice, to limit our consumption of calories or increase our amount of exercise.

Given this information, what can we do with it? Well, if you were to want to lose weight, you ought to be consuming no more than 1,500 calories a day (or whatever your program tells you), so 1,500 divided by 250 is six. if you ate 250 calories every other hour, that would give you twelve hours.

Therefore, eating light but often would be a beneficial strategy or program to follow, because firstly, you are only providing your body with what it needs, when it requires it and secondly, you are able to better maintain a steady blood sugar level, which means that you level out the spikes and troughs you experience in a normal day’s cycle.

Two hundred and fifty calories does not seem a lot, but it is surprising what it will stretch too, if you take the time to investigate. It is true that you will have to rigorously restrict some foodstuffs, like bread, pasta, rice and potatoes, but whoever honestly thought that you could lose weight by eating that stuff anyway?

If you do not have time to cook several times every day, look in your supermarket. There are loads of ‘250 calorie’ microwave meals. You don’t want to eat that? I can’t blame you. so get a good cookbook, which shows calorie content. You are at work all day? OK, eat some fruit, but choose wisely. It can be done, it only takes a little determination and planning.

Can You Fast For Fitness?

February 26th, 2010

A lot of people do not understand their bodies. That much is clear because they believe that fasting will help them become fitter. They feel convinced that their bodies will feed off their surplus fat and that they will lose weight as a consequence. They also seem to think that they will automatically end up with more muscle, just in the right places too. Some take up fasting for fitness because they believe that it will rid them of the toxins in their bodies.

Another belief that these fasters have is that they are will be able to flush out all of the toxins in their bodies by drinking plenty of water while not eating food. Even if this is true, it would be a lengthy procedure that would mean that you would have to fast for at least five to seven days though in order to conclude the detox process, although it is still not clear scientifically whether fasting is the right tactic for those that seek fitness.

There are many other paths to fitness that do work well though. For example, you can cut back the amount of food that you eat. Cutting back is not fasting, it is dieting and it is not only far more effectual, it is also far less difficult. This, together with drinking plenty of water and increasing your amount of physical exercise will help you to get fitter.

If you drink a lot of soda like cola or lemonade, which are full of sugar, like a lot of kids do, or lots of cups of sugared tea or coffee, like a lot of adults do, then just replacing those drinks for water or weak tea will help you lose weight quite rapidly even if you do not make any other changes to your diet or your amount of activity.

It is also likely to damage your body if you embark on a strenuous exercise routine only relying on body fat to keep you going. Your body probably will not be able to deliver enough energy to fuel such a change, because your metabolism will be too low.

Someone going about it in this way, can become very weak and dizzy. It is not a good idea to run the risk of injury because you have not given your body all the energy it requires to complete the tasks you are requiring it to perform.

It is better to see a doctor before you make any changes to either your diet or your fitness routine. Discuss with your doctor about your thoughts on fasting and fitness. They will be able to tell you whether they think it is something you can try or whether it is just too risky.

Fasting is all right if you have do it for religious purposes, but do not attempt much physical exertion. Ask a Muslim how he or she feels during Ramadan! Fasting for long periods can lead to high blood pressure and even liver damage. So, be very wary before attempting to starve yourself fit, there are much better methods.

Strategies for Treating Acne

February 26th, 2010

Most people with acne try to treat their blotchy skin with creams, face washes, soaps, lotions and treatments. However, the easiest way to treat acne is by altering your diet and getting rid of acne-producing things such as fried food. A healthy diet, rich in natural unprocessed foods such as vegetables, fruits, grains and beans is the first recommendation for treating acne.

Foodstuffs containing trans-fatty acids, milk, milk products, margarine, shortening and synthetically hydrogenated vegetable oils, as well as oily foods, should not be eaten. It seems the prevalence of acne in the United States is caused by the typical American diet. Americans tend to eat fried food in great quantities, usually cooked in the most harmful of fats and oils.

However, not all fats are bad, but the fats that average Americans eat make them more susceptible to get acne and other skin problems. Items that can irritate are ice cream, cheese, bacon, and milk. Furthermore, acne cannot really be cured using creams and soaps because the root cause of the condition lies below the skin.

Pimples, spots and blemishes are produced by bacteria and other irritants lying underneath the skin’s oil glands and hair follicles, which are usually caused by improper hygiene, scratching and poor diet.

This unhealthy diet could be caused by too high a proportion of items like processed, fatty, fried and sugary foods in your diet. A diet that is healthy for your skin must consist of raw or lightly cooked vegetables, especially green, leafy vegetables that contain valuable trace minerals and fibre. Fresh green vegetables are essential, however you should also eat more lean protein sources, such as fish and chicken and complex carbohydrates, like rice, whole-grain bread and potatoes in your diet.

These fibre-rich foods should help ensure a clean gastrointestinal tract, which is especially vital to the control of acne. Eat three healthy meals a day in order to provide you with sufficient vital nutrients and to decrease your desire for sugary or greasy fried foods.

You should eat more foods that are rich in vitamin A, like apricots, watermelons, and broccoli, as well as lean beef, lentils, nuts, beans and whole grains, because they are rich in zinc, which can also be helpful in preventing acne breakouts. It’s also imperative to drink plenty of water to help clean the poisons out that contribute to acne.

Extreme Weight Loss Diet-How To Lose Weight Faster Than You Thought possible

February 19th, 2010

I don’t think anyone would disagree with me when I say having a nice looking body is one of the most sought after things. You not only gain confidence by having other people look at you wishing they had your body, but you feel better about yourself. A great way to do this is by going through an extreme weight loss diet, in this article we will show you three incredible tips on how to set one up. Once you are done reading you will be on your way to losing the pounds quickly and easily.

1-Make sure you are eating at least five smaller meals per day

One of the most important things when it comes to losing weight quickly is to make sure you don’t go more than four hours without eating a meal. Some of you may be wondering how eating more often helps lose weight. Once you go four hours without eating your metabolism starts to slow down which means you don’t burn as many calories. If you are consuming food at least every three hours you will keep your metabolism spinning fast.

2-Don’t skip the most important meal of the day

Obviously, you have heard that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. If you skip breakfast or just have a really small breakfast you will slow down your metabolism for the rest of the day. When you eat breakfast, you want to make sure it consist mostly of protein and carbs, try to keep the fat under ten grams. Oatmeal with a protein drink is perfect.

3-Try to stay away from sugars

When it comes to losing weight, the two most dangerous words in the English dictionary consist of cakes and candy. The only time it is ok to consume a lot of sugar is before and after a workout, because most of the sugar will be delivered to your muscles rather than fat storage. It is always a good idea have fruits right after a workout because they are loaded with the good kind of carbs.

Menopause And Weight Gain: Is There A Connection?

February 18th, 2010

Studies of women aged fifty and over reveal that most women in this age group are convinced that their weight increase is connected with the menopause in their judgment. If you take into account the fact that some people might be using this as an justification and that others may not have made allowances in their diet for decreased levels of activity due to lifestyle changes, it is still difficult to account for why women in this age group have a tendency to put surplus weight on different areas of the body, especially the stomach, whereas any weight gained in younger women tends to be on the hips.

In fact, the truth is that hormonal changes do have a role to play in this phenomenon, although the process is not fully understood. At menopause a woman stops ovulating, her monthly menstruation periods come to an end, and her body produces much lower levels of the female hormone estrogen, which is responsible for the ovulation process.

Low estrogen has been shown to cause weight gain in animals and it is almost definitely the reason why women’s bodies change shape. While women of childbearing age store fat in the lower body, after the menopause they store it on the abdomen instead, like men. This leads to a greater risk of heart disease.

At the same time, both men and women tend to find muscle turning to fat as they grow older and the metabolism slows down. This means that if you do not adjust your eating habits, you will most likely find that your weight increases. A person of 60 just does not require as many calories as a person of 40.

Hormonal therapy with estrogen is sometimes prescribed to control menopausal symptoms. Many women will be astonished to hear that studies have shown that hormonal therapy does not result in weight increase. Some women experience bloating and water retention in the early stages of hormonal therapy but this is usually temporary.

Hormonal therapy can reduce the risk of heart disease by preventing the changes in storage of body fat around the abdomen and lowering cholesterol. On the other hand, hormonal therapy has been linked with an increased risk of breast cancer in some studies.

If you find that you are gaining weight around the menopause, there are several things you can do.

Firstly, you should eat a healthy, low fat diet with plenty of fibre and avoid sugar.

Secondly, you have to take regular exercise. As people get older their physical activity levels naturally go down. Work frequently becomes less physically demanding, there are no kids to run around after, we take less active holidays and do things more slowly. Thirty minutes of reasonable physical activity every day will help to balance out the effect of this.

Thirdly. you must preserve your muscle strength and mass. Use weights for arm muscles and walking or cycling for your legs.

Fourthly, try not to get worried about the alterations to the shape of your body. If you are not too overweight, but simply have a thicker waist and slimmer legs, then don’t worry.

As customary, you ought to seek advice from your doctor before commencing any exercise program, if you have any medical conditions or if your fitness levels are low. Your doctor can also help with symptoms of the menopause and weight gain.

How To Lose Weight Quickly

February 18th, 2010

Apart from physical appearance, weight affects a person in many ways. It could be the overall quality of life, self-esteem, depression, health risks, and physical incapacities. There are a lot of advantages to losing weight. It is for this reason that a lot of people are searching for a weight loss technique that will slim down those excess pounds and get a beautiful, jaw-dropping body.

The first thing that an overweight individual ought to do is find a doctor to provide the best weight loss program. This will only be done after a full physical examination, which will to the determination of a proper weight loss technique. To lose excess pounds fast and efficiently, four aspects of one’s life should be altered: what to eat, how to eat, behaviour and amount of activity.

Here are a few fast recommendations that can affect an over-weight individual’s whole life:

1: Rapid weight loss is achieved by a multi-faceted technique that is made up of mindset, exercise, and, in some cases, dietary supplements. Start by studying a food plan that can be easily adopted into your current way of life. Follow an exercise plan that includes a minimum of fifteen minutes a day brisk walking, running, swimming and/or dancing.

2: Set yourself realistic targets. The ability to focus and have a proper mindset enables a person trying to shed weight to quickly lose those extra kilos. You must develop discipline and a proper mind set, a dieter will never get disheartened and pack it in

3: Listen to what your body is saying. Each and everyone’s body reacts differently to different fast weight loss programs. Try substituting one program for another to assess the body’s reaction. An exercise program must be suited to your body, as some are not able to exercise as rigorously as others can. If walking is all that can be done, then walk, since this is proven to be the best exercise. Muscles burn calories so it’s also a good idea to put on a little more muscle and it looks good too.

4: Eat more fibre because it makes you feel fuller sooner and takes longer to digest, making it longer before you will be hungry again. For instance, a couple of slices of whole grain bread will remain in the gut longer and put off hunger longer than white bread, which turns in to sugar more quickly. giving you a quick, sugar spike, which soon passes, leaving you hungry again.

5: Keep away from fried food especially deep-fried, as it contains a lot of fat. However, although fish and chicken appear to be far leaner than beef, these white meats can contain even more fat than beef if it is fried. It is recommended that those on a strict diet choose grilled food, since it does not have much fat after the food has been cooked.

6: Drink lots of fluid. Drinking at least six to eight glasses of water a day keeps the body ‘flushed’ and because weight loss depends on how the body eliminates body wastes, the body must stay hydrated.

So, all in all, discipline and consistent application is still the way to rapid weight loss. Light dieting, workout, and the correct amount of nutritional supplements performed in regularly everyday will result in a quicker weight loss than having a huge, but short-lived campaign that is followed by a return to your bad old habits, as this only leads to gaining more weight than before the weight loss plan was started.

How To Keep Your New Year’s Resolution To Lose Weight.

February 18th, 2010

Without a shadow of a doubt, the most frequent New Year’s resolution in the West is to lose weight. However, it is also the first New Year’s resolution most apt to be broken! Losing weight is not difficult in theory, but practice is oh, so different. This is because it involves lifestyle changes.

Our bodies change as we get older and typically our level of activity decreases too. Maybe, we get an office job with a promotion, whereas we used to work ‘in the field’. But people in general, do not regulate their diet to match their change in circumstances. We sit behind our desks or in retirement and think we can still eat and drink like we did twenty years ago. Big mistake!

Fortunately, there are dozens of diets on hand to help us attain our weight loss goals. There are the traditional calorie counting diets, as advocated by Weight Watchers; there are the ‘new era’ diets like Atkins, which have us counting carbohydrates and there are no end of fad diets which are frankly not worth wasting time talking about.

The choice of which diet you would like to follow is all yours, of course, but it is well worth examining the main types of diet to see which one will suit you. Then you must determine whether you will require the help and encouragement of a weekly visit to a club or not, or whether you can get that camaraderie from an online club of slimmers, where you talk to fellow slimmers in the club forum online.

It is also worth fixing in your mind, why you want to diet. Is it to look better? Or to feel more at ease in yourself? Or is it for health reasons? Or all three? Have a think about your reasons and let them motivate you. Whenever, you feel like packing it all in, remember your motivation. Get a book and journal your progress, but first write your motivation in bold capitals on the front page or cover. Keep it in front of you and read it out loud to yourself every day.

Consult some of the slimming sites online and work out a few key numbers like the typical weight people are for your height, sex and body type and your BMI or body mass index. Write these figures on the first page of your book too and use them as the eventual goals.

You could produce a graph and plot your weekly weight to see how you are doing. Set realistic goals and targets. You can get loads of free information from the Weight Watchers and Atkins websites or / and go to see your doctor for advice and leaflets.

Aim to shed something like 10-20 pounds in the first month and eight to ten per month after that. Go slowly and aim to go slowly, because then you will hit your targets and you won’t feel like giving up. When you get within five to ten pounds of your target weight, assuming that you have lost a lot of weight, throttle back a little and allow yourself a little more leeway. Drop your target to one pound a week, so that you will get a feel for ‘eating normally’.

The dreaded exercise; you have to face it, you will need to do more exercise, but two times thirty minute walks a day is ordinarily enough. You could swim once a week too or get an exercise machine, if you are tied to the house by family.

The Rapid Weight Loss Roller Coaster

February 11th, 2010

It is a good idea to set yourself targets, if you want to reach a goal. However, there is a right way and a wrong way to go about this. For instance, if you are a size 14 and you spend a fair bit of money on some beautiful size 8 dresses as motivation, you will probably feel quite cheesed off if you are not wearing them a month later.

It is not a good idea to make yourself feel bad, so the right way to have done this would have been to set smaller, more easily attainable, less expensive goals. A consequence of disappointing yourself like that could be depression or / and desperation and desperation to meet your targets can lead to stupid decisions.

Foolish decisions like following a fad diet, because it promises you rapid weight loss. There is no such thing as sustainable rapid weight loss without a change of lifestyle. Yes, you can go for surgery and have lumps cut off yourself or you can pump yourself full of diuretics and squeeze the water out of yourself, but the weight will come back, unless you change the way you live.

Any diet that promises rapid weight loss without recommending a healthier, more active lifestyle is doubtful. Many of these types of diet are fad diets. The organizers of these diets are only interested in selling you magic potion drinks or powders as meal substitutes. I have even seen one company selling magnetic earrings which were ‘guaranteed’ to make you lose weight, if you dieted and did more exercise!

Of course you will lose weight if you diet and exercise, but carrying the earrings around with you is not helping. It just adds to the depression when you read in the newspaper that the guru you have been following is outed as a con artist.

Here are a few tell-tale signs to help you spot a phony diet:

Any diet that requires you to miss meals should start red lights flashing. If you stop eating, you are reducing the amount of calories you are consuming, so you can expect to lose weight. That is not rocket science. You do not need to pay for advice like that.

However, this approach does not necessarily work either. If you miss a meal, your blood/sugar levels will drop and that has different consequences for different people, but none of them are advantageous. It will also increase the likelihood that you will overeat at the next meal. It would be better to eat a salad, an apple or a banana instead.

Any weight loss program that says you can lose weight without exercising or without dieting is definitely iffy too, because exercise is essential for good blood circulation and metabolism, which are vital to your losing weight and living healthily.

However, exercise alone will not guarantee good health, you have to diet too. In this context ‘dieting’ just means eating healthily.

You do not have to wear anything special to lose weight either. Electric vibrating belts, magnetic earrings, sweat-inducing cummerbunds and the like, do not work. Full stop. They do not work and in a similar vein, powder and liquid substitutes are not worth it either. Get a liquidizer and make your own or just eat properly.
